Shechen Monastery and Study Center in Bodhgaya, India

Bodhgaya, the Diamond throne of India, is the center of the Buddhist world. It is there, under the Bodhi Tree, that the renunciate Prince Siddhartha became the Buddha Shakyamuni. Thousands of people from all over the world go to Bodhgaya on pilgrimage and nearly every Buddhist country has built a temple there.

Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche (1910-1991) planned to construct a monastery of the Nyingma School in Bodhgaya so that its rich tradition would also be present there. Accordingly, in 1996, a monastery complex was built under the direction of Shechen Rabjam Rinpoche and with the participation of dedicated volunteers and donors.

The Monastery complex is located a few minutes walk from the Great Stupa. The main building houses a spacious Temple with frescoes on the life of the Buddha painted by teachers and students from the Tsering Art School. Another building provides resident quarters for about 50 monks who live, practice and work in the Monastery.

As there are so many foreign visitors to Bodhgaya the Monastery has a separate library reading-room stocked with books on Buddhism in western languages. The Shechen Institute for International Buddhist Studies offers a ten-day, in-depth study program of Buddhist philosophy and practice for students from all over the world. The teachings are given by the disciples of Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche and are translated into a number of languages. There is a guesthouse for visitors and the Institute’s quarters are available for group rental. Throughout the year, teachers of the Nyingma and other traditions are invited to give reading transmissions and commentaries on Buddhist scriptures.

The Monastery operates a Mobile Medical Clinic that serves the local community and a Tibetan Medicine Clinic. The medical program is staffed by doctors and Shechen monks.
